I’m down two more lbs! I’ve also been able to pull some old clothes out of the closet and wear them! Whoo hoo!

Update on me…

Posted by Amy - February 5th, 2007

I don’t know if anyone is reading this anymore, but I’ll give you an update anyway. :0)

I’m sticking to plan and am now down a total of 12 1/2 lbs. I’ve also dropped a several inches. I haven’t measured, but I was able to put on several dresses on Sunday that simply did not fit before! Two of my skirts were even a bit big!

I eat very simple and clean. I also walk on my treadmill a min. of 5 days a week. I’m finally starting to enjoy my workouts.. which is no small miracle.

 I’ll post again soon!

I’ve been away too long..

Posted by Amy - January 24th, 2007

I’m so sorry I have been away for so long. You know how crazy life can get, especially around the holidays. That’s not an excuse for at least not checking in now and then.

I’m happy to report that since my last post I’ve lost more weight. I’m now down a total of 10.5 lbs. Most of this loss has been this month. I was not a very good girl over the holidays so naturally I didn’t lose anything. Thankfully I only gained a couple of pounds through it all.

I’m forcing myself to exercise. I’m just not one of those people who enjoy it, no matter how hard I try. I can say that with each day it’s getting easier. I’m not dreading it as much as I once was - though I can hardly say I’m excited about it either. I’m currently walking a minimum of 30 minutes on my treadmill daily, except for Sundays. I have been averageing around 45 mins to and hour with about 2 miles being the average distance. I try to jog now and then just to get my heart pumping.

I’m losing weight rapidly now… most of what I’ve lost has been in the last week actually. I’m on an ultra low-carb plan right now. I eat very small portions and keep my carbs around 10-15 a day. I’m also keeping my calories very low right now, which seems to be helping as well. I’m doing what it called Kimkins boot camp. I started a week ago and have lost 7 lbs since. It’s strict eating and a “must-do” exercise regimen. I was sceptical at first, but I must say it’s working wonders for me right now. :0)

Does anyone actually read this blog?

I was given my Christmas present early this year. Last month my dh bought me a Pro-form treadmill! I love it and it has so much variety I should never get bored. If I do want to spice things up I can connect it to the internet and workout with an online instructor or class. Right now I’m doing good just to do the basic 1 mile walk, I’m just so out of shape. But eventually I’ll start walking farther, adding incline, and upping my speed.

I’m still eating well and sticking to plan. NO CHEATS! I feel very good about this since I’m prone to a bite here and there on occassion. Seeing the progress I am making is a tremendous help in sticking with my plan.

I’m doing great!

I know it’s been a really long time since I’ve written. We are finally settled in from the move and now we are doing work on the house. Last week we laid new flooring in the dining room. Always something to do!

We had a nice Thanksgiving and I didn’t do bad at all. I started getting back on the straight and narrow with my eating plan on Nov. 10th and have been doing wonderful ever since. I’m already down 7 lbs! I’m feeling so much better since I’ve gotten serious about it. I think there must be something special about this time of year for me. The last time I started lcing and did really well was on Nov. 11th, 2001. So it must be something about mid-Nov. that works for me. Anyone know if the Farmer’s Almanac says anything about starting a diet in November? Hmmm.. could be something to look into. :0)

I’ll do my best to update as often as possible. I expect to be telling you about more loss very soon!

Two months later

Its been almost 2 months since my last post.  My weight has stayed the same.  I was away for 2 weeks on vacation and wasn’t able to stick to low carb.  Hey - I was in Cape Cod and everything on the menu was batter fried!!  But I am allowing myself more flexibility which although I am not losing more weight, seems to help me on a day to day basis.  I allow myself to eat something and have half of it tomorrow as leftovers instead of eating it all and “starting over” the next day.

Gestational Diabetes?

Posted by Tiffany - September 18th, 2006

While we were away at the Cape on our “babymoon,” the OB office called and alerted me that my glucose test came out too high. My number was 157, which isn’t terribly high - but certainly cause to wonder if my family history is repeating itself.

Different practitioners use different standards for determining whether your level is too high. Some will say that if your one-hour blood sugar level is 140 milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood plasma (mg/dL) or more, you need to have the glucose tolerance test. Others put the cut-off at 130 mg/dL to catch more women who may have gestational diabetes, even though there are likely to be more false positives this way.If your blood glucose level for this test is higher than 200 mg/dL, most practitioners will consider you diabetic and you won’t be required to take the glucose tolerance test. But any score between 140 and 200 means that you’ll have to take the three-hour glucose tolerance test for a definite diagnosis.

In the past few weeks, I have had multiple dizzy spells, extreme sweets cravings, really bad shakes and sweating if I don’t eat every 2.5 hours, extreme fatigue shortly after meals, rapid weight gain, and am peeing a full bladder every 10 minutes. All signs of a sugar problem.

Our trip was relaxing - it was nice to get away from everything. But with my ridiculous need to pee so frequently, we had to stop at every McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Donuts we saw and it got so annoying that my husband just suggested we stay put and not do much.

I was doing very well with the low-sugar-intake for a large portion of the pregnancy. It wasn’t until recently that I couldn’t control my cravings for Fruity Pebbles cereal, white bread, and donuts. Being accustomed to not having much sugar (since low-carbing taught me how bad it is,) I would have thought I could resist the urges. But they were WAYYYYYY too strong and I started eating a box of cereal a day, 6 slices of white toast at breakfast, etc. Egad! I knew something was wrong, but my monitor never showed a reading over 115, so I didn’t even think the glucose screen was necessary. The midwife at my OB said the screen reads your sugar metabolism differently, so I gave in and went for the test. I didn’t make it the full hour - at 50 minutes I got so dizzy I nearly fainted and made the nurse take my blood then. When I went next door to deli to get breakfast afterwards, I started to faint, and they had to get me orange juice and cold towels to bring back my color and coherence. I knew at that moment that the test would come back bad.

Once we got word about my test result, I cut off the carbs - switching to wheat bread, brown rice, Splenda, cut out the french fries and mashed potatoes, and upped the protein again. After a wonderful prime rib dinner the other night, my sugar monitor went from fasting 88 to only 98 after the steak, (as opposed to one day when I had a 79 reading when fasting and then after a big pasta meal went up to 127.) It’s pretty obvious how my body is reacting to sugars and starches.

The doctor wants me to go for the 3-hour glucose test, but my fears are kicking in. If I couldn’t make it through the 1-hour, how on earth can I do the 3-hour? And what effect will that prolonged test have on me and my baby that day? I don’t want to stress him out that much! I think, given my family history of both gestational AND Type II diabetes, I should simply assume that I have gestational diabetes and adjust my diet accordingly. I already monitor my sugar (since I was hypoglycemic before the pregnancy,) so I can see fluctuations according to what I eat and change where I need to. I’ll go for the 3-hour if he really thinks it necessary, but until that visit, I am simply making adjustments to keep my sugar in check.

By the way… weight went from 209 last week to 213 this week! Rapid gain…most-likely from sugar issues. But baby is also getting MUCH bigger now, so I blame him for a little of it. :) Total pregnancy weight gain to date: 10 lbs.
